The City of Maumee recently completed improvements to the towpath including new pedestrian walkways, upgraded lighting, the planting of hundreds of trees and the installation of an ADA-compliant drinking fountain, jug filler and pet fountain.
A commemorative bench program also provides a way for community members to memorialize and honor loved ones while giving back to the community.
The original towpath dates to the 19th century when it was used by horses and mules to pull boats down the canal which helped farmers and merchants ship their products to be sold beyond Ohio. Those interested in more of the canal’s rich history can visit Providence Park, where they can take a tour and see lock 44, the only still-existing operational lock in the State of Ohio. The City of Maumee encourages the public and all members of the community to visit and enjoy this new addition to Towpath Park.
