Susie’s Coats for Kids Brings Warmth and Comfort to Northwest Ohio Families

For nearly two decades, Susie’s Coats for Kids has been keeping children warm in Northwest Ohio through the generous donations from residents and businesses. On September 20, families can participate in the Annual Distribution Day, where they can select new coats, hats, gloves, socks and shoes and more.

“The mission of Susie’s Coats for Kids was inspired by my mother, Nora, who as a single mom faced poverty and poor health with grace, humor and humility,” founder Susan Perry said. “She passed away at just 47, but her strength and love for her children stayed with me. I founded Susie’s Coats for Kids to honor her struggles and to help families facing similar challenges today.”

The organization works closely with schools, agencies and community partners to get the items to those in need, no questions asked.

“Too often parents must make impossible choices between food, housing, utilities and clothing. By providing warm apparel, free and unconditionally, we hope to relieve one burden so families can focus their limited resources on other basic needs.”

From Head to Toe

In 2023, Susie’s Coats for Kids partnered with Hannah’s Socks, ensuring that children were covered from head to toe.

“Since our founding, we have provided tens of thousands of new winter coats, hats, gloves and socks to underserved children in Northwest Ohio. For many children, these coats and accessories are the first brand-new items of clothing they have ever received, making the gift especially meaningful.”

The annual Distribution Day will take place at Jones Leadership Academy, with a guest appearance by Muddy the Mud Hen.

“Our annual Distribution Day is a joyful celebration of community and generosity. Hundreds of children and their families come together to choose brand new coats, hats, gloves and socks. The very best part is seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they get to pick out a coat in their favorite color with a new matching hat and gloves. It’s pure joy.”

Perry is thankful for the support the organization receives from the many community partners that donate clothing as well as toys, books, games and personal hygiene items.

“Beyond Distribution Day, we maintain 70 coat closets in elementary and middle schools, as well as through agencies in Northwest Ohio. Coats, hats, gloves and socks are available whenever a need arises.”

Care and Community

In addition to clothing, the organization also enriches the lives of children by providing family outings to local attractions.

“We also proudly partner with many nonprofits and community initiatives such as the Toledo Zoo, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Toledo Public Library and the Toledo Metroparks to provide free admission tickets, giving families opportunities to experience culture, nature and fun together. We believe warmth and community engagement empower children to walk to school safely, play outside with friends, improve attendance and experience the best Northwest Ohio has to offer.”

Perry believes that what began as a tribute to her mother has transformed into a “community-wide movement of kindness and compassion.”

“We could not do this without the generosity of our donors, partners and volunteers. Every coat, every pair of socks, every ticket to the zoo represents the love and care of a community coming together for its children,” Perry said. “My deepest hope is that through Susie’s Coats for Kids and Hannah’s Socks, children feel not only warm, but also valued, celebrated and supported by their community.
