Living History Day: Wood County in WWII

The Wood County Museum will host its 22nd Annual Living History Day on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2 pm, presented by DACOR Internet Services. The free program, held on the museum grounds, brings history to life as local residents portray citizens of Wood County, with this year’s honorees chosen in conjunction with the museum’s new World War II exhibit.

The event offers a unique opportunity to connect with local history through first-person portrayals. Honorees include Elizabeth Bowlus, a Women’s Army Corps member; Elizabeth Dunipace, a WWII nurse; Carl Eschedor, an Army veteran and POW; Louis Gilles, who later built the case protecting the original U.S. Constitution; Harold Gonyer, a veteran and lineman; Ruth (Baughn) Hoffman, a USO employee and librarian; Albert Lowell Randall, a doctor, outdoorsman, and WWII veteran; and Carrie Swartz, a homemaker and mother of five WWII veterans. Each will be represented by community members, offering a moving tribute to their service and lives.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for outdoor seating. In the event of inclement weather, the program will move inside the museum’s meeting room. Parking will be available in the museum lot.

Support for this year’s program comes from DACOR Internet Services, Edwin & Irma Wolf, Portage Center Arbor Gleaners #524, North Baltimore Gleaners #461, and the Wood County Genealogical Society.
