Partners in Education’s Mentors in Toledo Schools are continuing their literacy program through the lost art of letter writing.
The group typically tutors and mentors Toledo Public School children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade in person, but COVID-19 has required the volunteers to get creative. They are sending the students letters, encouraging them to keep up with their studies while prompting the kids to send them a letter in return.
“Students had been receiving extra literacy help from mentors and tutors four days a week at school,” says Michelle Klinger, Partners in Education’s Executive Director. “We were looking for a really personal way to engage both our volunteers and our students who don’t all have access to technology. So, we thought…why not pen pals?”
