Toledo Lucas County Public Library is adding a new book club to its lineup.
The new club will read and discuss books relating to Toledo’s history. The Local History Book Club will meet at the Local History Space inside the Main Library every other month on the first Wednesday of the month.
The book club will discuss We Are the Troopers: the Women of the Winningest Team in Pro Football History by Stephen Guinan for the first meeting on Wednesday, April 3 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The book can be found at the library or you can download the eBook or Audiobook on the website.

We Are the Troopers delves into the story of the legendary Toledo Troopers, and their fight to become Toledo’s National Women’s Football League. The eclectic group of women came together to form the women’s team that eventually went down in history as the “winningest team in professional football history.”
“The players were housewives, factory workers, hairdressers, former nuns, high school teachers, bartenders, mail carriers, pilots, would-be drill sergeants. Black, white, Latina. Mothers and daughters and aunts and sisters. But most of all, they were athletes who were denied the opportunity to play a game they were born to play,” the website states.
The Toledo Troopers won 58 games, losing only four and tying one in their nine seasons before they eventually folded in 1980.
If you cannot make the first meeting but still want to join, do not fret. The book club’s itinerary is scheduled for the rest of the calendar year. The club will have their second meeting on Wednesday, June 5 to discuss the book Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. Check the calendar for other upcoming meetings.
