The Bowling Green State University Center for Archival Collections is inviting the community to turn penmanship into preservation during Cursive for a Cause, a special volunteer event set for Sunday, March 9, from 10 am to 4 pm in the Pallister Conference Room at Jerome Library.
Held as part of the national AmeriCorps Week of Service and in collaboration with ServeOhio, the free event will support the preservation of women’s history through hands-on transcription work. Volunteers will read handwritten cursive documents from the Center’s collections and use provided laptops to create typed transcripts, transforming fragile historical records into searchable, accessible digital resources.
The materials highlight the lives, work and contributions of local women, helping ensure their stories remain visible and available to researchers, students and the broader public. By converting handwritten pages into text-searchable documents, participants will directly contribute to academic research and long-term public history initiatives.
No prior experience with archives or transcription is required. Advance registration is encouraged, though walk-ins are welcome and volunteers may contribute as much time as their schedules allow throughout the day.
